Part# 1 informed us about the 5 major reasons keeping your hips strong are essential. Now let's look at the 3 types of falls which lead to major broken and bruised hips and how you can reduce each one.
1) Accidental Falls: Just like the name suggests these falls are from something accidentally happening. If you're outside, it could be slipping on ice, gravel, water or stepping on a loose stone. If you're home it could be, tripping on an electrical wire or slipping on a loose rug.
You can prevent some of these accidents by:
- walking with a cane
- walking hand in hand with someone
- wearing the proper gripping footwear while outside
- remove clutter from the home
- place handrails in certain areas as the kitchen and bathroom
2) Anticipated Falls: Are those in which an individual has a particularly high risk factor to falling. For example limited eyesight, dementia, bladder or bowel issues and those who are taking meditations.
You can prevent some of these anticipated falls by:
- getting stronger by participating in a strength training program
- making sure they are getting regular checkups (eyesight, mental acuity)
- having guardrails in the bathroom, proper lighting and removing clutter
- letting those around you know what medications you're taking and talking with your doctor about the potential effects of your medications
3) Unanticipated Falls: Are when someone, who otherwise has a low risk of falling, experiences a fall that is usually due to a health issue that wasn’t known about. Some examples could be heart attacks, seizures, stroke or just passing out.
You can't truly prevent these types of accidents from happening completely. however, new technology like a fall detect monitor can bring the right assistant to you quickly. Some of these devices now come with a GPS tracker also. So if you're outside you can be found easier.
